Before modern regulation: cultural context and early scientific notice

Ibogaine is an indole alkaloid associated with Tabernanthe iboga, a plant with longstanding ceremonial and cultural significance in parts of Central West Africa. Is ibogaine approved by the FDA?

Ibogaine is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treatment. Its U.S. regulatory status has historically limited lawful clinical development and routine medical use.

Do state initiatives change federal law?

No. A state initiative can support research, create a state-level program, or influence policy debate, but it does not on its own change federal controlled-substance law or create FDA approval.

Why are historical claims around ibogaine contested?

Historical accounts, case reports, observational work, and public claims do not all carry the same evidentiary weight. Questions of safety, causality, legal interpretation, and clinical outcomes require careful source-by-source reading.
